For most of my life, rest was something I allowed myself only after I had “earned” it. Finish enough work and then rest. Be productive enough and then rest.
The problem was… I never reached “enough.” So I kept going until my body stopped before I did. Maybe you’ve felt that too — waiting to rest until everything is done, even though everything never ends.
I realised I wasn’t tired because I was weak — I was tired because I’m human
I remember staring at my laptop one day, rewriting the same sentence again and again. My mind was empty, but I kept pushing. I thought discipline meant forcing myself.
But I wasn’t lazy. I was drained. Humans aren’t meant to run nonstop. Rest wasn’t a luxury — it was something I should’ve taken earlier.
Making rest a “reward” meant I barely rested at all
My to-do list grew faster than I could finish it. Resting “after everything was done” basically meant never resting.
By the time I allowed myself a break, it wasn’t rest anymore. It was collapse.
I saw how bad my work became when I was running on empty
My focus slipped. My patience disappeared. My ideas felt dull. Everything took longer.
Pushing through exhaustion didn’t make me stronger — it made everything harder. Short breaks actually made me better.
Rest doesn’t have to be big to matter
The small things helped the most:
- breathing for ten seconds
- stepping outside for a minute
- drinking water slowly
- closing my eyes for a moment
These tiny pauses gave my mind a place to reset before carrying the weight again.
The guilt was the hardest part
Even when I rested, guilt followed me. “You should be working. You don’t deserve this yet.”
Then I asked myself, “Would I ever say this to someone I care about?” No. So why say it to myself?
Rest changed the moment the guilt left.
Why I don’t treat rest like a reward anymore
I don’t want a life where the only time I breathe is after I’m exhausted. I rest because it keeps me clear, kind, stable, and human.
If you’re tired, it’s not a flaw — it’s a sign.
