What I Do When I Feel Like Giving Up

Some days, I don’t want to write.
Or work.
Or show up.

There’s this quiet voice that says,
“Maybe this isn’t worth it.”
“Maybe you’re not built for this.”
“Just stop. It’d be easier.”

And truth is… I’ve listened to that voice before.
I’ve quit things halfway. I’ve let ideas gather dust. I’ve let self-doubt win.

But slowly, I’ve learned something.

Giving up doesn’t always mean walking away.
Sometimes, it just means pausing long enough to breathe.

Person sitting alone on the edge of a rocky cliff, surrounded by mist, symbolizing deep thought or emotional struggle.

1. I let myself feel it

I used to fight it. That heavy, dull feeling. I’d pretend everything’s fine, slap a smile on, and keep going.

But now? I sit with it.

I say, “Okay. This is hard. And it sucks right now.”
No need to fix it. Just naming it softens the edge.

Sometimes, that alone is enough.

2. I come back to why I started

One time, when I almost deleted my blog, I read a comment someone left on an old post.

They said, “This helped me feel less alone today.”

That single line brought me back.
Not to some big goal.
Just to a small truth:

I started because I wanted to say something real.
And maybe—just maybe—it would land with someone who needed it.

That still matters.

3. I do the tiniest thing

I’ve learned not to chase motivation.
Instead, I ask myself:
“What’s one kind thing I can do for myself right now?”

Sometimes it’s:

  • Closing the laptop and drinking water
  • Sending one honest message
  • Washing my face
  • Writing one sentence instead of a whole post

Tiny things. Quiet things. But they keep me going.

4. I remind myself: it’s okay to be tired

There’s a lie that says if something matters, it should feel good all the time.

But even the things I love feel heavy sometimes.
That doesn’t mean I’m failing.
It means I’m human.

And maybe you are too.

5. I talk to someone who won’t fix me

Not advice. Not pep talks.

Just someone who says,
“Yeah, I get it.”
Someone who sits in the yard with me. No pressure to explain.

We all need someone like that.

What I’ve come to believe

Most of the time, when I feel like giving up, I don’t really want to quit.

I just want relief.
From the noise. The pressure. The weight.

And rest gives me that. Not quitting.
Gentleness gives me that. Not hustle.

If you’re in that place right now—
Where everything feels too much and nothing feels worth it…

Take a breath.
Take a pause.
Not forever. Just for now.

You don’t have to conquer today.
You just have to stay.

Sometimes, staying is the bravest thing you can do.
