3-Year Vision Mapping Exercise

I used to only think in “what’s next?”
Next task. Next month. Next thing to fix.
And that worked — until I realized I was busy, but not really going anywhere I chose.

That’s when I started asking:
What would my life look like 3 years from now, if I moved with intention?

Not a perfect vision. Not a fantasy.
Just a soft direction that feels like me.

Colorful visual of a workflow with stages: Idea, To Do, Doing, Done — representing goal progression.

Start with how you want to feel

Most vision exercises begin with what you want to achieve.
I prefer starting with how I want to feel.

Because at the end of the day, that’s what we’re chasing, right?

Ask yourself:

  • Do I want to feel calm or energized?
  • Safe or bold?
  • Creative? Connected? Free?

Write down 3–5 words.
That’s your emotional compass. Let that shape the rest.

Then look at your life areas

I take out a notebook and divide a page into sections:

  • Self & Well-being
  • Relationships
  • Work or Purpose
  • Finances
  • Environment (home, lifestyle)
  • Spiritual/Inner life

For each one, I ask:
In 3 years, what would this area look like if it truly supported the way I want to feel?

Example:

“In 3 years, my mornings are slow and nourishing. I work 4 days a week, doing something meaningful. My home feels simple and peaceful. I have deep friendships, not many, but real.”

No need to write it “perfectly.”
Write what you see. Write what feels possible, even if it feels far.

Don’t rush the vision — sit with it

Some days, the vision feels clear.
Other days, it shows up in pieces. A scene here. A word there.

That’s okay.
Vision isn’t about control — it’s about clarity and connection.

Revisit it. Let it evolve.
You’re not trying to predict the future.
You’re just learning to listen better.

Break it into simple anchors

Once your vision feels soft but steady, ask:

  • What can I do now that aligns with this?
  • What needs to shift — even just a little?

You don’t need a full plan.
You just need a few anchors that help today feel like a small echo of that future.

This 3-year vision exercise isn’t about creating pressure to achieve more.
It’s about honoring where you want to head — and walking in that direction slowly.

Because when you know where you’re going, you stop rushing.
You stop comparing.
And you start building a life that actually feels like yours.
